Although the residence is traditional in style, the owners envisioned a modernist design for their pool and pool house retreat.
Positioned at the far end of the two-acre property, the pool and pool house sit on a bluff overlooking Montauk’s Culloden Point — a dramatic but exposed site shaped by northwest winds and salt spray from Long Island Sound. These coastal conditions informed every design decision. The outdoor kitchen features marine-grade, corrosion-resistant stainless steel, while the pool house is crafted from mahogany. The surrounding landscape is planted with salt-tolerant species including London plane trees, cherries, and crape myrtles, creating a lush yet resilient environment.
LaGuardia Design Group oversaw all aspects of the project, from the pool house architecture to the layout of the landscape. The goal was to create a series of outdoor spaces that could comfortably host gatherings while feeling intimate for family use. Expansive lawns and terraces frame the pool, while shaded lounge and dining areas beneath an arbor provide more private retreats. A restrained plant palette, attention to light and material detail, and a calm, cohesive setting define this sophisticated coastal landscape — designed for both lively entertaining and quiet moments by the water.
